Magistrates Court of Western Australia

Extraordinary Driver's Licences

An extraordinary driver's licence is granted at the discretion of the court. It allows someone who has been disqualified from driving by the court to drive in certain circumstances.

Forms 5,6,7 and 8 of the Magistrates Court (General) Rules 2005, are also available to download and must be used in court proceedings relating to extraordinary driver's licences.

More information about extraordinary driver's licences can be found at the Department for Planning and Infrastructure.

Amendments relating to the Road Traffic Act 1974 (theAct) came into effect on 30 June 2008. The effect of these amendments is that a person disqualified from driving under a demerit point suspension can no longer apply for an Extraordinary Driver's Licence (EDL) and a new Demerit Point Regime (known as Double or Nothing) is in place.

The new process is administered by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) and any enquiries in relation to demerit point suspension should be directed to the DPI's call centre on 13 11 56 or their website.

Transitional arrangements allow for existing EDLs granted prior to 30 June 2008 to continue.

Information about how to apply for an extraordinary driver's licence is available from the downloads listed below.
